SRINAGAR: After a period of cooler temperatures, the mercury has increased again across Jammu and Kashmir, with Qazigund and Kokernag recording heat waves as maximum temperatures settled more than 5 degrees higher than normal.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, witnessed a maximum temperature of 34.4 degrees Celsius, which was 4.3 degrees above normal and just 0.2 degrees below the heat wave threshold.
In south Kashmir’s Qazigund and Kokernag, the mercury reached 33.4 degrees Celsius and 33.0 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The mercury rose across Kashmir amidst a forecast of heat wave conditions across Kashmir and parts of the Jammu division for the next 72 hours.
In Pahalgam, the mercury settled at 29.9 degrees Celsius, while in Kupwara, it settled at 34.6 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg, a famous ski resort, recorded a maximum temperature of 24.5 degrees Celsius.
In the Jammu division, the mercury also increased, with Jammu recording a maximum temperature of 37.4 degrees Celsius.
Banihal recorded a maximum temperature of 32.0 degrees Celsius, while Batote, Katra, and Bhaderwah recorded maximum temperatures of 29.3 degrees Celsius, 33.5 degrees Celsius, and 34.2 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Amidst the possibility of a heat wave for the next 72 hours, the weatherman has forecasted the possibility of a short spell of rain in a few areas of Kashmir and many parts of the Jammu division on July 23 and 24. (KNO)
