SRINAGAR: Kumar Rajeev Ranjan (IAS), the current Revenue Secretary in Jammu and Kashmir Government, is set to face trial in the infamous gun licence scam.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has received approval from the central government to prosecute Ranjan for alleged irregularities in granting gun licences.
The CBI is investigating the issuance of over 2.74 lakh gun licences between 2012 and 2016, when JK was still a state, allegedly for monetary considerations. The scam is estimated to involve more than Rs 100 crore.
Ranjan was implicated in the case when he was the Deputy Commissioner of Kupwara. The CBI registered the case under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2006.
The prosecution sanction was granted on November 28, 2024.
It may be noted that last year, Ranjan, along with his father and brother Jyoti Ranjan, was among two dozen people, including serving and retired government officials, gun dealers, and middlemen, against whom the Enforcement Directorate filed a complaint for prosecution on charges of money laundering.
