SRINAGAR: The Drug Control Department on Saturday seized a batch of medicines used for illegal abortions at the International Airport in central Kashmir’s Srinagar district.

Deputy Drug Controller Nighat Jabeen, while speaking to reporters said that the intercepted drugs, valued at nearly Rs 3.5 lakh, were discovered during a targeted operation to curb illicit activities. The vigilant team, acting on Jabeen’s directives, initiated a thorough investigation into the origins of the seized medicines.

“We are actively working to identify individuals and entities involved, both directly and indirectly, in the transportation and distribution of these illegal abortion drugs,” Jabeen said.

Preliminary findings suggest that the consignments were transported through channels exploiting illegal drug licenses, raising concerns about the potential misuse of pharmaceutical licenses for illicit purposes.

The Drug Control Department is collaborating with law enforcement agencies to conduct a comprehensive inquiry. Jabeen affirmed their determination to bring those engaged in the illegal abortion drug trade to justice and prevent activities that pose serious risks to public health.
