SRINAGAR: Mutton prices in the valley have increased by approximately 22 percent following recent instructions from the J&K administration to refrain from regulating meat and livestock product rates.

Mutton consumers in various parts of the valley expressed their frustration, stating that they have no choice but to purchase mutton at exorbitant prices. Without any regulatory body in place, butchers are setting prices at their own discretion, leading to sudden overnight increases of over Rs 100 per kg. Residents, such as Shabir Ahmad from Srinagar, feel helpless and believe that a rate regulatory body is necessary to address the situation.

Farooq Ahmad Dar, a trade leader based in Srinagar, highlighted the problems arising from the absence of a rate-regulating body for mutton and other livestock products. In the past, people could approach the CAPD, Tehsil, or district administration to file complaints about overpriced mutton. However, with uncontrolled mutton rates, there is now uncertainty about where to address such concerns.

Dealers have announced new rates until Eid, but there is a lack of clarity regarding post-festival pricing. Dar emphasised the need for a rate-regulating body and suggested implementing guest control during the wedding season to mitigate potential increases beyond Rs 650 per kg.

According to a senior functionary at the All Kashmir Wholesale Mutton Dealers Association, the fresh rates of mutton were determined by the Mutton Retailer Association, with conditions in place to maintain control over the prices. The Retail Mutton Association expressed concerns about varying and high rates in the valley and unanimously agreed to sell mutton at Rs 650 per kg until Eid. Mechanisms were discussed to ensure that all butchers adhere to the agreed-upon rates.

Meanwhile, a CAPD official said that they have received clear directions not to regulate the prices of mutton and other livestock products. The Department of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs recently instructed authorities to cease price regulations. Prior to this notification, the government-approved price for mutton was Rs 535 per kg. (KNO)
