SRINAGAR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday held a bilateral meeting with European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, where both sides welcomed the conclusion of negotiations for the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement.
The leaders underscored the agreement as a significant milestone in India–EU relations and called for its expeditious signing and implementation, noting that it would open substantial opportunities for trade and investment while aiding diversification of global supply chains amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.
Recalling the 16th India–EU Summit held in India in January 2026, both sides reviewed progress in bilateral ties and expressed satisfaction over the advancement of the Joint India–EU Comprehensive Strategic Agenda endorsed at the summit. They noted that the framework would further strengthen the strategic partnership and deliver mutually beneficial outcomes.
The discussions highlighted the shared values between India and the European Union as the world’s two largest democracies with open market economies and pluralistic societies. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening trust-based cooperation and expanding engagement across multiple sectors.
The leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments, including recent events in West Asia, and reiterated their commitment to a stable and resilient multipolar global order that promotes peace, prosperity and sustainable development.
The meeting took place on the margins of the G7 Summit in Evian, France.
