SRINAGAR: The Jal Shakti Department on Tuesday dispelled ongoing rumors regarding the installation of water meters in Kashmir, clarifying that no proposals have been received or considered for the region at this time.
A senior Jal Shakti official confirmed, “As of now, the department has not received any proposal or government directive regarding the installation of water meters in Kashmir.”
The official emphasized that any decision on water metering lies with the government, but there are currently no plans in place.
Regarding the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)—a centrally-sponsored initiative to provide safe drinking water to all households—the official reported that over 85% of households in Kashmir now have access to drinking water. The department aims to achieve 100 per cent household coverage by March 31, 2025.
Water metering, which measures consumption in residential and commercial settings, is recognized as a tool for better monitoring, efficient distribution, and improved water management. However, there is no immediate plan for its implementation in Kashmir, the official reiterated. (KNO)
