SRINAGAR: In a series of coordinated actions against the drug menace across Kashmir, police on Saturday made significant headway by arresting drug peddlers, seizing large quantities of narcotic substances, and destroying drugs worth lakhs under court supervision.
In Awantipora, police arrested a drug peddler during a vehicle checking operation at Gadikhal Chersoo. The accused, identified as Abdul Rashid Khan, son of Gh Mohammad Khan and a resident of Poshwan, was intercepted while riding a scooty. Upon search, officers recovered 2.8 kilograms of charas powder-like substance from his possession. The scooty used in the commission of the crime was also seized. A formal case has been registered under FIR No. 71/2025 at Police Station Awantipora, and further investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, in north Kashmir’s Sopore, the District Drug Disposal Committee led by SP Sopore Divya D (IPS) and DySP DAR Sopore destroyed a significant quantity of seized narcotic and psychotropic substances. The destruction was carried out at an approved incineration site in Lassipora Pulwama in strict compliance with the rules outlined in the 2022 regulations and by orders issued by the Special Court (NDPS) Baramulla.
The consignment destroyed included 4.646 kilograms of poppy straw/powder, 30 bottles of Codeine Phosphate, 10 Alpha Drug tablets, and 1,981 capsules of SpasmoProxyvon. These substances had been seized in several NDPS-related cases registered at various police stations across Sopore.
In another major anti-drug operation in Anantnag, police seized over 30 kilograms of charas powder during a series of night raids on residential properties in the village of Wantrag, under the jurisdiction of Police Station Mattan. Based on specific intelligence inputs, the police raided three separate houses. At the residence of Jehangir Ahmad Khan, son of Mohammad Abdullah Khan, 23 kilograms and 330 grams of charas powder were recovered. A second raid at the home of Reyaz Ahmad Khan, son of Sher Afzal Khan, led to the seizure of 3 kilograms and 670 grams of charas powder. The third raid, targeting the house of Nowshad Pathan, son of Kastiya Pathan, resulted in the recovery of 3 kilograms and 900 grams of the same substance.
All three accused individuals have been arrested, and cases under relevant provisions of law have been registered. Police said investigations are ongoing and that further arrests and recoveries are likely.
