SRINAGAR: Samba police said on Tuesday that it has arrested a student of the Central University of Jammu, along with another accused, for their alleged role in an arms trafficking racket that supplied country-made weapons to criminals in the region.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Samba, Virinder Manhas, said the arrests were made during the investigation of FIR No. 71/2025, registered under the Arms Act at Police Station Vijaypur. The case, he said, marks a “significant breakthrough” in the fight against illegal trafficking of firearms in the area.
Police said that on July 11, 2025, a Central University student, identified as Kaif Ahmed, son of Shami Ahmed and a resident of Barharia in Siwan district of Bihar, was arrested for allegedly smuggling pistols and country-made weapons from Bihar and selling them to local criminals. A country-made pistol was also recovered from his possession at the time of the arrest.
As the probe expanded, another accused, Balwinder Singh alias Goru Jatt, son of Swarn Singh and a resident of Ranjari in Vijaypur tehsil of Samba district, was arrested on August 8. Based on his disclosure, police recovered a country-made pistol from Rahya on August 17.
Continuing the investigation, police said that another recovery was made yesterday when a country-made revolver was seized from the village Ranjari under Police Station Vijaypur.
Police said further investigation is underway to identify other possible links and networks associated with the arms trafficking racket.
