SRINAGAR: Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district rescued an eight-year-old girl allegedly abducted while on her way to school and detained two persons, including the complainant’s former wife, in connection with the case, officials said on Tuesday.
The minor was recovered after police intercepted a vehicle bearing registration number HP64A-9928 at Khoon Naka in Battal following a complaint lodged at Police Post Rehambal.
According to police, Sindoor Singh, son of Beli Ram and a resident of Tikri Pangeri in Udhampur district, filed a written complaint stating that his eight-year-old daughter had been forcibly taken while on her way to school.
Acting on the complaint, police registered FIR No. 114/2026 under relevant kidnapping provisions, including Section 137(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, at Police Station Rehambal and launched an operation to trace the child.
Officials said the vehicle was intercepted during the operation and the girl was safely recovered.
The two persons found in the vehicle were identified as Ganjan Singh and his wife, who is the complainant’s former wife.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the child was allegedly taken from Udhampur by the woman amid a parental dispute following the father’s remarriage, police said.
Following the rescue, the case was referred to the Station House Officer of Police Station Udhampur for immediate care and assistance at Parisha, a home for girls.
Police said the vehicle and both individuals are in custody and further legal proceedings will follow based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
The District Legal Services Authority, Udhampur, is providing assistance to the child, including protective measures, counselling services and medical care, if required.
Officials said the child has been placed in a safe environment and all statutory safeguards under guardianship and child protection laws are being observed.
