SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has extended the deadline for submitting feedback on the proposed amendments to the Unified Building Byelaws (UBBL) – 2021, following criticism from business and environmental groups.
As per the Housing & Urban Development Department (H&UDD), the new deadline for submitting suggestions and comments is February 17, 2025, extending the previous deadline of January 18, 2025.
The decision comes amid backlash from stakeholders such as the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI) and the Environmental Policy Group (EPG), who accused the government of attempting to implement the amendments in a “hush-hush” manner. Both groups had strongly advocated for more time to assess and respond to the proposed changes.
The amendments propose removing all restrictions on the height and area governing residential and commercial constructions in Jammu & Kashmir. Notably, the changes would eliminate existing limitations on the Floor Area Ratio (FAR) or Floor Space Index (FSI) across all plot categories. This includes residential and commercial complexes, cinemas, mall-cum-multiplexes, community centres, banquet halls, and more.
The extension aims to provide stakeholders with an opportunity to voice their concerns and contribute to shaping the amendments. The government has urged citizens, businesses, and environmental groups to submit their feedback to ensure inclusive and balanced policy-making. (KNO)
