SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police have raised and deployed a new force of 960 trained policemen in the border areas of Jammu and Kashmir with a mandate to combat infiltration and militancy, a newspaper reported from Delhi. The new unnamed force will work on the model US Marines work.
“Nearly 560 of these police personnel have been deployed in the border areas of Jammu division and the remaining in Kashmir Valley,” The Indian Express reported. “Significantly, this is the first-ever force in the Jammu and Kashmir Police whose personnel cannot be deployed for any other duty.”
“Nearly 960 jawans who passed out from the Jammu and Kashmir Police Training School were deployed in border areas on Wednesday,” the newspaper quoted DGP RR Swain saying. “The selections will be made from the border areas and they will be deployed in the border areas.”
Swain has said that this force will not be utilised for any other activity. Strict instructions have been given to supervisory officers to ensure these personnel remain focused on their primary duties to enhance area security and make it increasingly difficult for adversaries to infiltrate.
The idea behind the initiative is to use the local knowledge about the geography of the recruits in curbing infiltration. This will help police have more human intelligence flown down to the decision-makers. “As the personnel are locals, it is expected that they will find it easier to get information about any unusual movement in the area. This is also expected to help police and security forces take on infiltrating terrorists near the border itself,” the newspaper added.
