According to a statement, a police spokesperson said that under BNSS, citizens have been provided with the facility to lodge complaints in electronic forms, such as SMS, email, WhatsApp, Citizen Service Centres, and Web Portal/Internet (e-Forms), in addition to verbal, telephonic, or written complaints.

“As of today, 52 complaints have been received through SMS and email at different police stations across the Union Territory (UT). In addition, 64 complaints have been received via Citizen Service Centres, and 10 complaints through the Web Portal/Internet (e-Forms). More than 70 such complaints have been converted into FIRs. As per Section 173 of BNSS, any electronic complaint received by the police shall be entered into the records; however, the complainant must sign the electronic complaint within three days,” the police said.

Regarding ZERO FIRs, the police said that more than 100 such FIRs have been registered in different police stations across J&K. Out of these, 83 FIRs were transferred to different police stations outside J&K.

“As the general public is now more aware of cybercrime trends, checks and balances have been introduced at various levels to prevent misuse of the e-FIR provision by miscreants,” the police added. (KNO)
