SRINAGAR: In a significant leap towards enhancing security measures, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have introduced an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven facial recognition system aimed at swiftly detecting and apprehending militants, overground workers (OGWs), and other criminals. The cutting-edge technology, developed by a Chennai-based firm, has been successfully implemented in the Kishtwar district.
High-focus CCTV cameras, integrated with AI-powered facial recognition devices, have been strategically installed at key entry and exit points, as well as other crucial locations in Kishtwar.
According to Khalil Poswal, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kishtwar, the AI-driven system can store up to 5000 photographs and identify multiple faces, even if individuals are wearing masks. The technology utilises deep learning to analyse and compare facial features in real-time against a vast database of known individuals.
Poswal highlighted the system’s ability to accurately match faces, providing crucial information for identifying and tracking suspects, including active terrorists in the region. The system’s deployment is expected to significantly aid law enforcement in the swift identification of individuals with anti-national affiliations.
The AI-powered facial recognition system has been strategically deployed at key entry points, checkpoints, and other sensitive areas in Kishtwar. The real-time monitoring capability, handling up to 16 cameras simultaneously, ensures comprehensive surveillance.
Poswal revealed plans to replicate the system at other entry points, such as Margon Top and Sinthan Top, and eventually extend its implementation to districts across Jammu and Kashmir, including Kashmir, Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi, and Doda. The technology is set to play a pivotal role in preventing the movement of militants and their sympathisers in these mountainous areas that have faced the brunt of terrorism.
The system is not limited to local use; there are plans to integrate it with the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) portal at the national level. Additionally, a mobile app is in development, allowing police officials to receive real-time information about the presence or movement of suspects.
Law enforcement authorities have already fed photographs and details of terrorists, OGWs, and other criminals into the system, enabling it to automatically match faces captured in CCTV footage with the existing database.
The AI-based facial recognition system has undergone successful trials in Kishtwar, with officials reporting positive outcomes. Its implementation marks a pivotal step in ensuring public safety and combating crime effectively in the region.
By embracing this cutting-edge technology, Jammu and Kashmir aims to create a safer and more secure environment, reinforcing its commitment to smart, technology-driven law enforcement. The move is expected to contribute significantly to the broader framework of intelligent and proactive policing, aligning with the principles of innovation and public safety.
