SRINAGAR: A student from Jammu and Kashmir studying at a pharmacy college in Nagpur was allegedly assaulted by a group of local residents in the Kamptee area of the city on Sunday evening, according to media reports and police sources.
Although no official complaint has been lodged by the victim, a senior police officer confirmed the incident, stating that the motive behind the attack remains unclear.
The altercation reportedly occurred around 6:15 pm on April 27, when two first-year Bachelor of Pharmacy students from Doda and Jammu were returning to their hostel. One of them had stopped to relieve himself, while the other waited by the roadside. According to police, a group of locals confronted the student standing alone, questioning his identity and origin. Upon his failure to provide satisfactory answers, he was allegedly assaulted.
The situation deescalated only after the second student returned and explained that both were college students, police added.
The incident came to light after one of the students informed Nasir Khuehami, national convenor of the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association. Khuehami later posted details of the incident on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), describing it as a brutal assault by “fringe elements” and urging Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the home portfolio, to take strict action.
“The student from Doda area of J&K was brutally thrashed without any rhyme or reason by fringe elements,” Khuehami stated on X. Citing the victim’s version, he added that two to three individuals assaulted the student, slapping and punching him repeatedly on the face, stomach, and limbs.
Khuehami said he subsequently received a call from Manoj Kumar Sharma, Inspector General of Police (Law & Order), who assured strict legal action and sought contact details of the victim.
The student ruled out any communal or hate motive, attributing the incident to a misunderstanding, possibly due to their unfamiliarity with the area.
Police say they are monitoring the situation and are prepared to take action if a formal complaint is registered.
