SRINAGAR: In a major step towards strengthening road safety and traffic regulation, the Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police has been equipped with more than 350 modern vehicles and hundreds of advanced enforcement gadgets to improve monitoring and management on roads across the Union Territory.

Officials said the newly inducted fleet includes interceptor vehicles, highway patrol units, motorcycles, cranes and other specialised vehicles aimed at enhancing enforcement capabilities and ensuring smoother traffic regulation.
According to officials, the department has procured over 1,000 enforcement assets through road safety funds to modernise the traffic policing system and improve response mechanisms on highways and urban roads.
The newly added fleet includes 213 Pulsar motorcycles, 69 Royal Enfield motorcycles, 19 interceptor vehicles, 16 Innova highway patrol vehicles, seven Hydra cranes, 23 cranes and three Tata Winger vehicles for highway management and field enforcement duties.
To ensure transparency and accountability during enforcement operations, traffic police personnel have also been provided with 685 body-worn cameras.
Apart from vehicles, the department has procured several modern traffic management tools, including traffic safety belts, LED batons, barricades, safety jackets, traffic cones, breath alcohol analysers and first responder kits.
Officials further said that traffic enforcement agencies across Jammu and Kashmir have fully shifted to a 100 percent e-challan system to promote transparent and technology-driven enforcement against violators.
Official figures reveal that during 2025, the Motor Vehicles Department issued 52,543 e-challans compared to 40,197 in 2024. During the same period, 1,528 vehicles were seized, 1,641 driving licences suspended, 10,439 vehicles blacklisted, 1,192 registration certificates cancelled and 300 route permits withdrawn.
Authorities stated that the modernisation drive and strict enforcement measures have contributed to a continuous decline in road accidents across Jammu and Kashmir over the last three years.
As per official data, road accidents declined from 6,120 cases in 2023 to 5,726 in 2024, and further reduced to 5,287 cases in 2025.(KNC)
