Jammu Kashmir Waqf Board Seeks Holiday on Nund Reshi’s Urs, JKNC Restoring Martyrs Day Holiday

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board has officially requested the General Administration Department (GAD) to designate October 30, 2024, as a public holiday in honour of the Urs of Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani (RA). This announcement follows the postponement of the originally scheduled holiday, which was set for September 30, 2024, as per Government Order No. 1687-JK(GAD) issued on September 28, 2024.

In an official communication, the Waqf Board conveyed that the new holiday date had been confirmed by the Executive Magistrate/Tehsildar of the J&K Waqf Board in Kashmir. Chief Executive Officer Zaheer Ahmad highlighted the cultural and religious significance of the Urs, urging that the holiday be formally declared for the Kashmir province on Wednesday, October 30, 2024.

The Urs of Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani (RA) is one of the most significant spiritual observances in the region, drawing numerous devotees eager to commemorate the legacy of the revered saint. An official announcement from the GAD is anticipated soon to formalise the holiday, allowing for widespread participation in this cherished spiritual event.

In related news, Jammu and Kashmir is poised to welcome a new government by early next week, signalling the end of six years of direct rule by the Centre. One of the initial actions of the anticipated National Conference (NC)-led government may involve restoring previously cancelled holidays, such as July 13 (Kashmir Martyrs’ Day) and December 5 (Sheikh Abdullah’s birth anniversary), which were revoked after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

The NC is expected to retain holidays introduced by the Lt Governor’s administration, including October 26 (Maharaja Hari Singh’s Accession Day) and September 23 (his birth anniversary), to maintain harmony with Jammu’s residents. Additionally, Congress has committed to reinstating the “Darbar Move,” the bi-annual transition of government between Srinagar and Jammu, which had been halted for budgetary reasons.

The new administration may also revisit decisions made to diminish the legacy of Sheikh Abdullah, including the controversial renaming of the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre and the removal of the “Sher-i-Kashmir” title from police medals—actions that have drawn significant criticism from the NC.
