The decision marks a significant enhancement in railway connectivity for south Kashmir and is expected to benefit commuters, tourists and traders by providing improved access to one of the region’s key economic centres.

During the meeting, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah discussed ongoing and proposed railway projects aimed at strengthening transport infrastructure and supporting economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir.

The newly approved halt at Anantnag is expected to improve passenger convenience and reduce travel constraints, while also integrating the town more closely with the broader rail network linking Jammu and Srinagar.

The Chief Minister welcomed Indian Railways’ initiatives in the Union Territory, noting that the Vande Bharat Express has significantly reduced travel time between Jammu and Srinagar while offering modern passenger amenities.

He also highlighted the role of the expanding rail network in improving freight movement, particularly for horticultural produce such as apples and cherries, as well as construction materials, which he said has helped reduce logistics costs and expand market access for local producers.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to the development of railway infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, stating that the decision reflects efforts to address regional requirements and improve public convenience through responsive transport planning.
