SRINAGAR: Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday asked residents of border villages evacuated due to cross-border shelling not to return home yet, citing the presence of unexploded shells that still pose a threat to life.
According to a police advisory, unexplored munitions remain scattered across several areas following Pakistani shelling, and bomb disposal squads will be deployed to sanitise and clear these locations.
“Do not return to frontline villages. Lives are at risk as unexplored munitions remain after Pakistani shelling,” the advisory reads.
PTI reported that since Wednesday, 25 people have been reported dead and over 50 injured, with Poonch district accounting for 18 of the fatalities. The escalation followed Operation Sindoor, during which India carried out strikes on nine terror infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, in response to the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 people.
India and Pakistan on Saturday announced an understanding to cease all military actions across land, air and sea with immediate effect, following four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes. However, hours later, New Delhi accused Islamabad of violating the agreement.
