SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCC&I) has appealed to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene in the travel disruption affecting approximately 3,000 Hajj pilgrims from Jammu and Kashmir.
The KCC&I said that these intending pilgrims have been unable to travel to Saudi Arabia following the cancellation of flights from Srinagar International Airport due to recent cross-border hostilities between India and Pakistan. The Chamber said the announcement of a ceasefire now provides a window for authorities to restore flight operations and ensure timely travel.
According to the Chamber, the Hajj pilgrimage is time-bound and must be performed within specific dates on the Islamic calendar. Delays could prevent many from fulfilling the religious obligation. The KCC&I urged the administration to arrange additional flights from Srinagar to Jeddah or facilitate transit through alternative airports with connecting services.
The Chamber also noted the financial and logistical difficulties faced by the families of the stranded pilgrims, many of whom have already completed preparations for the journey. It called on the Union and central governments to take immediate steps to enable travel before the Hajj period concludes.
The KCC&I said it remains in contact with stakeholders and will continue to follow up on the issue.
