JK Heatwave to Ease from Wednesday, MeT Forecasts Rain

   

SRINAGAR: The Meteorological Department has forecast relief from the ongoing heatwave in Jammu and Kashmir, predicting intermittent light to moderate rain and thundershowers at many places in the Valley starting Wednesday.

Hot and humid weather conditions are likely to continue on Tuesday, with the possibility of brief spells of rain and thundershowers at scattered locations.

Independent weather forecaster Aadil Maqbool said Tuesday is expected to be the hottest day of the season, with Srinagar city likely to touch 36°C.

Director of the Meteorological Department, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, said that intermittent spells of light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected at many places, with the possibility of heavy rain at isolated locations in the Jammu division from June 25 to 27.

He added that from June 28 to 30, intermittent rain and thundershowers are likely at scattered places, and similar conditions may continue from July 1 to 2.

The MeT department has issued an advisory stating that moderate to heavy rain with intense showers is expected at a few places, mainly in the Jammu division, from June 25 to 27. It warned of the possibility of flash floods in vulnerable areas, as well as landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones.

The advisory also noted the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas of Jammu’s plains and a rise in water levels in rivers and local nallahs. Farmers have been advised to suspend irrigation, spraying, and fertiliser application during the June 25–27 period.

Meanwhile, maximum temperatures continued to remain above normal in most parts of Kashmir and below normal in some areas of the Jammu division.

In Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, the maximum temperature settled at 34.6°C, while Jammu, the winter capital, recorded 36.6°C.

Qazigund recorded 33.4°C, Pahalgam 28.8°C, Kupwara 33.5°C, Kokernag 32.6°C, and Gulmarg 25.2°C.

In the Jammu division, Banihal recorded 30.5°C, Katra 32.5°C, Batote 29.1°C, and Bhaderwah 32.0°C. (KNO)
