SRINAGAR: The Meteorological Department has issued a fresh advisory forecasting a spell of unsettled and potentially hazardous weather across Jammu and Kashmir from April 19 to April 21, with authorities urging caution across the region.
According to a detailed update, the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has warned of heavy rain, snowfall over higher reaches, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong gusty winds, particularly between April 19 and April 20. The situation is expected to ease by April 21, with more stable weather returning from April 22.
On April 19 and 20, the weather is likely to remain generally cloudy with light to moderate rain and snowfall in higher altitudes. However, moderate to heavy precipitation is expected in isolated to scattered areas, especially on Saturday. Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are predicted to persist through late Sunday evening, raising concerns over localised flooding, landslides, and disruption of transport routes.
An intense band of clouds has already developed over Baramulla and Poonch and is moving towards central and southern Kashmir. Powerful thundercloud formations from the southern and western regions are expected to sweep across much of the Valley by late evening, bringing sharp spells of rain, hail, lightning, and strong winds.
The advisory urges people to avoid venturing outdoors during thunderstorms or lightning activity. Vulnerable areas, particularly hilly and mountainous terrains, remain at high risk of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones. Low-lying areas and orchards are also susceptible to waterlogging.
Farmers have been advised to suspend all agricultural operations, including orchard spraying, until at least April 21 due to the risk of weather-related damage and reduced efficacy of treatments. The recommendation follows previous disruptions in the farming calendar due to similar weather patterns.
April 21 is forecast to be comparatively milder, with cloudy skies and scattered rain or thunder in parts of the region. From April 22 onwards, a dry spell is anticipated, though light cloudiness may return briefly around April 25.
Authorities across Jammu and Kashmir are closely monitoring developments, with emergency preparedness being stepped up in vulnerable zones. Residents, travellers, and farmers are urged to remain alert, adhere to traffic and administrative advisories, and follow official updates to ensure safety.
The current weather forecast remains valid until 10 p.m. tonight.
