SRINAGAR: Amid heavy downpours across Jammu and Kashmir that have disrupted life and triggered panic buying, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Vijay Kumar Bidhuri on Sunday sought to allay public fears of a fuel shortage, stating that petrol stocks in the Valley remain sufficient and there is no need for panic.
“The situation is being monitored. There is no shortage of petrol. There is no way or question of rushing to petrol pumps. People need not to panic,” Bidhuri said, dismissing rumours circulating in the region.
According to official figures, the Valley currently has 5,205 kilolitres of Motor Spirit (petrol), enough to last 17 days under normal consumption. Diesel stocks stand at 12,735 kilolitres, which would suffice for 26 days. The statement comes in response to public concern and long queues at some fuel stations over the past two days, triggered by incessant rainfall and temporary road blockades in multiple areas.
Jammu and Kashmir has been grappling with sustained spells of rain, leading to waterlogging, disrupted transport, and fears of landslides, particularly along the vital Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
In a tragic development, three people lost their lives in a cloudburst in Ramban district, where landslides have brought vehicular movement on the highway to a halt. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary, who visited the affected areas, termed the incident “unfortunate” and assured that the government would extend all possible support to the bereaved families.
“The government shares the grief of the families who lost their loved ones. Restoration and relief efforts are underway, and the concerned agencies have been directed to work round the clock to clear debris and restore traffic on the national highway,” Choudhary said.
He also advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel and stay informed through official updates. “The Jammu-Srinagar highway is the main source of connectivity, and all efforts are being made to ensure it is restored as quickly as possible,” he added.
In a related development, Education Minister Sakina Ittoo announced via social media that all schools in the Kashmir Valley will remain closed for one day tomorrow, April 21, as a precautionary measure in view of the prevailing weather conditions and forecasts.
“This decision has been taken to ensure the safety and well-being of all students,” the minister said in her post.
Authorities have urged people across the Union Territory to remain calm, avoid panic buying, and follow safety advisories as the region continues to experience inclement weather.
