SRINAGAR: Schools in the Kashmir division are all set to reopen on Friday following a winter vacation of more than 87 days. An official said that more than ten thousand private and government employees will resume their academic activities.
Schools in Kashmir were scheduled to reopen on March 1, but due to inclement weather, authorities extended the vacations by a week.
The government on December 6 had announced winter vacation for all public and recognised private educational institutions in the Kashmir division as well as in the winter zones of the Jammu division in two phases, starting from December 10.
Winter vacations for classes up to 5th primary were announced from December 10, 2024 to February 28, 2025. Similarly, for the 6th standard to 12th standard, the vacations were announced from December 16 to February 28, 2025.
However, on February 28—a day before the reopening of schools—Education Minister Sakina Masood Itoo said that winter vacations for all classes in Kashmir schools had been extended until 6 March.
Itoo had said, “Keeping in view the prevalent weather conditions, the government has decided to extend the winter vacation for all government and recognised private schools of the Kashmir region.”
The minister had further informed that in case any student enrolled for the board exams could not reach the exam centre, the government would make sure that their exam would be conducted later.
Meanwhile, the authorities in Gurez valley had also extended winter vacation for all schools until 8 March. The decision was taken in wake of heavy snowfall and prevailing weather conditions in the area.
Pertinently, colleges in the Kashmir valley resumed academic activities on February 14 following fifty days of winter vacation. (KNO)
