Hundreds of students along with some faculty members of the University of Kashmir Thursday ran a campaign in support of Million March, programmed to be held in Srinagar against Narendra Modi’s Srinagar rally.
The ‘Million March’ has been called for by Syed Ali Geelani and supported by all the major separatist leaders including Kashmir’s Head Priest Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik.
Sources in the university said students marched to various departments of the university and met students, teaching staff and non-teaching staff and urged them to participate in the proposed rally.
“Students carrying banners raised pro-freedom slogans and talked to students and faculty members and defined to them the importance of ‘Million March’,” said an employee of the university.
In view of the banning of social networking pages and accounts supporting the ‘Million March’ by the state government, people in Kashmir particularly students have started a campaign to encourage the maximum participation of people in the ‘Million March’.
A student in the university said, “The objective of the campaign is to communicate to the people about the significance of the proposed march. Since our social networking accounts are being banned, we have decided to talk to people face to face.”
“The campaign evoked a widespread response. Students from different departments joined in and talked to various officers including teaching and non-teaching staff of the university. We hope to see a sea of people in Million March,” he added.
The students have also expressed rage over the ongoing arrest spree and crackdown on separatist camp. Students while addressing the participants in the campaign condemned the harassment of local populace on the pre-text of security.
