SRINAGAR: In a stunning display of talent and determination, nine-year-old Atiqa Asif Mir from Kashmir has made history by becoming the first female racer to win a race at the prestigious Rotax Challenge International Trophy.

Competing at the renowned Le Mans Kart International circuit, Atiqa clinched victory in Race 2 of the Heats in the Micro Max Category. Driving the Lando Norris kart for the championship-winning Dan Holland Racing Team, Atiqa showed remarkable adaptability and skill despite it being her first time at the legendary circuit with no prior practice.
Out of 36 drivers in the Micro Max category and 318 competitors from 40 nations overall, Atiqa’s performance stood out. Her triumph places her among the elite drivers who have previously achieved success in the Max series, many of whom have advanced to careers in Formula 1.
Atiqa’s remarkable achievement is not only a testament to her own talent and determination but also a tribute to the support and influence of her father, Asif Nazir Mir. Asif Nazir Mir, a former racing champion and India’s first National Karting Champion in 2000, has had an illustrious career in motorsport. His achievements include competing in the Formula Asia and the Barber Dodge Pro Series in the USA, establishing him as a prominent figure in the racing world.
Karting, known as a crucial stepping stone to higher levels of motorsport, has seen many of its stars transition to Formula One, including legends such as Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton, and Michael Schumacher. Atiqa, who began her racing career at the age of six, has already made a significant impact. Her early successes in the UAE, including a notable third place in the DAMC Karting Championship Round 4 at Dubai Kartdrome, highlighted her extraordinary potential.
Challenging gender norms in a traditionally male-dominated sport, Atiqa has become a beacon of inspiration for aspiring young racers, particularly girls. Her recent victory not only cements her status as a rising star but also serves as a powerful example of what can be achieved through passion and perseverance.
Since turning eight in November 2022, Atiqa has continued to impress in the Micro Max and Mini x30 categories, participating in the UAE National IAME and ROTAX Championships. Her exceptional performance, including a commendable fourth place in Sharjah among a competitive field, underscores her growing prominence in the sport.
Atiqa Asif Mir now stands as the youngest Kashmiri Indian and the only female UAE-licensed driver to achieve such accolades. From breaking a lap record in Dubai to becoming the first female to win a race at the Rotax Challenge International Trophy, Atiqa’s journey is a compelling narrative of youthful ambition and relentless drive.
Her father’s legacy and her own achievements highlight a bright future in motorsport, inspiring future generations of racers and proving that barriers can be broken with talent and determination.
