During the meeting, the delegation apprised the Lt Governor of the historical significance of Gandhi Memorial College, which was established in 1943 by philanthropic figures from the Kashmiri Pandit Community, specifically the Hindu Society of Kashmir. The college was created to address the educational needs of the society and has played a pivotal role in disseminating undergraduate education in the Kashmir Valley and the wider state.

Gandhi Memorial College is situated in Shamswari, Fateh Kadal locality of Srinagar, on the banks of the river Jehlum near the Mangleshwar Temple.

The delegation, including Prof Ashok Aima, former Vice Chancellor Central University of Jammu, SK Raina, Virender Raina, and Daleep Mattoo, emphasised the college’s historical reputation and its significant contribution to maintaining educational standards, promoting innovation, and ensuring equal educational opportunities.

The college’s developmental needs were highlighted, with a focus on modernisation, rationalisation, and diversification of undergraduate courses in Humanities and Social Sciences, Sciences, and Commerce. The delegation outlined plans to upgrade basic infrastructure, including the library, laboratory, and connectivity, to support the teaching-learning process.

Gandhi Memorial College operates as a Grant-in-Aid institution, receiving complete financial support from the state government. Administrative and financial control is under the government’s purview, with employee services governed by the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Service Rules (JKCSR).
