Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, Prof Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi, Tuesday called for setting high standards in academics and research and maintaining the same.
Chairing a meeting of the Allama Iqbal Library committee, Prof Andrabi said it is important that the University sets very high standards in its research and academic endeavours and make no compromise on its integrity.
According to a University of Kashmir statement, Prof Andrabi said the University has already initiated the process of “framing anti-plagiarism guidelines” in tune with its policy on the issue and constituted a panel for the purpose.
“We have to set high standards and closely evaluate publications, including PhD and MPhil theses, of our research scholars, to set and maintain high standards of academic integrity and honesty,” he said adding, “the award of MPhil and PhD degrees should be consequently subject to complete adherence to the anti-plagiarism guidelines. There shall be no compromise on it.”
The Vice-Chancellor also called for addition of journals and books of repute (in both print and e-content forms) in the Allama Iqbal Library (AIL) collections.
He said, “the AIL is one of the finest libraries in the country and the University takes pride in having the same.”
In his opening remarks, Chief Librarian Dr Abdul Majid Baba, highlighted the achievements and works of the Allama Iqbal Library over the years.
He said, “the Library has digitized more than 18,000 books and 400 PhD theses so far under two important projects.”
“As part of ‘Digitization of Rare and Out of Copyright Books’ project, 18,000 books (approximately 65 lakh pages) have been digitized so far. The project has been approved and financed by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India,” he informed.
Under another project ‘Shodganga’—approved and financed by the University Grants Commission, more than 400 backdated PhD theses of the University have been digitized and uploaded on Shodganga—a repository of Indian electronic theses and dissertations.
Underlining the future plans, Dr Baba said, “we intend to go for automation of central libraries of University’s satellite campuses and all departmental libraries, compiling bibliography of Jammu and Kashmir, expand computer lab for visually-impaired students and create MPhil/PhD database of the University from its inception.”
