SRINAGAR: Authorities have initiated legal action against seven food vendors in the Hazratbal area of Srinagar for violating provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act.
According to officials, the action followed an inspection by the Food Safety Team, led by Assistant Commissioner Yameen ul Nabi, after a video circulated on social media showing possible violations.
The team inspected a meat shop in Hazratbal which, according to local residents and the shopkeeper, had not been operational for over a decade. Officials said the premises were allegedly being used to store equipment while the owner ran a chicken vending operation on the street.
A broader inspection of the market revealed several vendors handling high-risk food items under unsafe conditions. Officials said the food was stored at improper temperatures and exposed to environmental contamination.
“Seven food business operators were found operating in insanitary conditions and failing to follow basic food handling procedures. Challans are being prepared and will be submitted to the Adjudicating Officer (ADC Srinagar) for legal proceedings,” officials said.
Officials said that awareness efforts are also underway to inform vendors about food safety regulations and hygiene practices. The department has warned of further action against those failing to comply, especially in the handling of perishable or high-risk food items. (JKNS)
