Addressing a function at the International Convention Centre following the inauguration of the marathon’s logo and website, LG Sinha said that the marathon will enhance the Valley’s tourism prospects. “This event will not only attract foreign and domestic runners but also create new livelihood opportunities for the youth,” he said. “Kashmir offers the best weather and atmosphere for a marathon.”

The LG described the upcoming marathon as a historic event for Kashmir. “In just two months, arrangements for this grand event have been finalised. It will convey a message of peace to the world,” he added.

Sinha noted that Srinagar will transform into a city of international competition, following the marathon starting on October 20. He highlighted previous significant events hosted by the city, including the G-20 Tourism Summit, golf tournaments, and international conferences. “Srinagar has been named a world craft city,” he said.

The LG remarked on the progress of JK’s youth, and said that they are now actively participating in and contributing to national development. “From a few hundred youth four years ago, we now see 50 lakh participating in sports events,” he noted.

He emphasised that such events will help establish JK’s identity as the natural and cultural capital of India. “We are also considering a similar event in Jammu,” he said.

Sinha further mentioned that the marathon will attract global attention to JK, offering an opportunity for those involved in trade and tourism to showcase the region’s unique culture and warm hospitality.

“The primary objective of the Kashmir Marathon is to highlight JK’s potential internationally, promote eco-friendly tourism, and encourage health and wellness. Local communities will be involved in planning and running the event, fostering a sense of pride and belonging while showcasing Kashmir’s rich heritage and scenic beauty,” he added.

Runners from across India and abroad are expected to participate in two disciplines: the marathon (42 km) and the half marathon (21 km)—(KNO)
