SRINAGAR: Leader of Opposition and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Sunil Sharma on Thursday launched an attack on the Jammu Kashmir government, alleging apathy towards flood victims in the Jammu division and corruption in major departments.
Speaking to reporters outside the Legislative Assembly after staging a walkout, Sharma accused the government of showing “complete insensitivity” towards those affected by the recent floods. “Despite widespread destruction, the administration has failed to provide meaningful relief or rehabilitation. Not a single senior minister has visited the affected districts,” he said.
The BJP leader further alleged large-scale irregularities in the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Mining Department, calling for a time-bound investigation. “These departments have turned into centres of corruption, where contracts are being awarded arbitrarily and development funds diverted for personal gain,” he claimed.
Sharma also accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of violating the Model Code of Conduct by announcing the establishment of a Law College in Ompora, Budgam, during the ongoing election process. “Such announcements are aimed at influencing voters and constitute a direct breach of the code. The Election Commission must take immediate action,” he asserted.
Defending the BJP’s walkout, Sharma said the party would continue to raise public issues until the government ensured accountability and transparency. “We left the House because the government refused to discuss the sufferings of flood victims. Our protest will persist until justice is done,” he said.
Earlier in the day, BJP legislators disrupted Assembly proceedings, demanding an adjournment motion to discuss the recent natural calamities. The Speaker’s decision to disallow the motion led to noisy scenes and the eventual walkout by the opposition members.
