SRINAGAR: A potential catastrophe was averted at a gypsum mine in Haroog Dharamkund area of Ramban district, as a landslide occurred during ongoing gypsum mining operations. The landslide trapped two individuals and several vehicles under the debris. Fortunately, prompt action was taken, and rescue efforts immediately began, Republic World reported.

According to SHO Dharamkund Manoj Sharma, as per Republic World the rescue operation, involving the Jammu Kashmir Police, Sashastra Seema Bal, and the Indian Army, is in progress. Additional teams from SDRF, CRPF, and sniffer dogs have also been called in to assist in the rescue. As of now, two labourers have been successfully rescued and taken to a nearby medical facility, while two vehicles remain trapped in the debris.

The incident is believed to have been triggered by heavy and incessant rains that have been affecting the district for the past week, disrupting even the movement on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

SSP Ramban Mohita Sharma, while speaking to Republic World confirmed that excavator operator Aijaz Ahmed and dumper driver Anil Singh have been rescued and sent to the hospital. Rescue efforts are still ongoing.

It’s worth noting that a similar tragic incident occurred a decade ago in May 2013 when two labourers lost their lives in a landslide while working at another gypsum mine in Dharam Kund area. The victims were identified as Javed Ahmed and Udham Singh, and their co-workers were quick to recover their bodies from the debris. The police registered a case in relation to that incident.
