SRINAGAR: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti broke down in tears on Friday during a press conference in Srinagar, as she appealed for restraint and dialogue between India and Pakistan, citing the rising number of civilian deaths, including children, in the escalating cross-border tensions.
“Casualties on the borders are regrettable. What is the fault of innocent children who have lost their lives? Immediate restraint and de-escalation are the need of the hour. It is crucial to apply wisdom in handling the present situation,” Mehbooba said.
Emotionally charged, Mehbooba asked, “Why are innocents being killed?” Her remarks came in the wake of the recent escalation following the April 22 Pahalgam attack and subsequent military responses from both sides.
She warned that the current trajectory of violence could have global consequences. “Both regions are under distress. If this continues, the whole world could be dragged into chaos,” she said.
Recalling past events, Mehbooba said, “After Pulwama, we all saw what happened. Now, following the Pahalgam terror attack, both nations stand dangerously close to the brink of war.”
She questioned the justification for civilian casualties amid military claims. “Both countries claim they’ve achieved their military targets—Pakistan claims it hit a brigade headquarters in Jammu, and India says terrorist hubs have been neutralised. But what is the fault of the minor children who are dying in the crossfire?” she asked.
Highlighting the suffering of the local population, Mehbooba added, “It is the people of Jammu and Kashmir who suffer in between. If a nuclear conflict breaks out, who will be left alive to claim victory?”
She concluded her address with a passionate plea: “I request both nations, please stop now. Jeeyo aur jeene do (Live and let live).”
“War and violence are against the spirit of humanity,” she said, adding, “Military action is not a solution—it only addresses the symptoms, not the root causes.”
