Speaking at the ‘Lok Samvardhan Parv’ at the University of Kashmir—an event running from April 5 to 13 under the theme ‘Bhagidari se Bhagyodaya’—the Chief Minister said Jammu and Kashmir is emerging from years of difficulty and now aims to be an equal stakeholder in the nation’s development.

“We are gradually coming out of difficult times. I request that pending proposals be approved so the people of Jammu and Kashmir can fully benefit from national programmes,” he said.

Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, inaugurated the event, with Minister of State George Kurien, Kashmir University Vice Chancellor Professor Nilofer Khan, and other dignitaries in attendance.

Omar Abdullah praised the initiative for offering a platform to local artisans and culinary experts to showcase their talent. “The magic in their hands is on full display,” he said, referring to the traditional crafts and wazwan cuisine being presented.

He highlighted the national importance of the Ministry of Minority Affairs, stating it plays a vital role in fostering inclusion in a country defined by its linguistic, cultural and culinary diversity. “Every citizen, regardless of background, must feel they are part of the nation’s journey,” he said.

Addressing the region’s unemployment challenge, he urged the Ministry to expand its outreach in areas like education, skill training and market access for artisans. “Our craftspeople work with great dedication but often lack support in grooming the next generation and finding new markets,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister also attended an I-League football match between Real Kashmir Football Club and Churchill Brothers Goa at the TRC Ground in Srinagar. The match, which ended in a 1–1 draw, drew a large local crowd.

Wearing a Real Kashmir FC jersey, Omar Abdullah expressed solidarity with the team and lauded its contribution in opening up national-level opportunities for Kashmiri youth. He also interacted with players and officials, commending their performance and enthusiasm.

“Sport, like culture, connects us and offers hope. It’s heartening to see our youth rise on such platforms,” he said.
