SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday introduced the Jammu and Kashmir Rent Authority Bill, 2025, in the Legislative Assembly, aiming to regulate the renting of premises and establish a mechanism for swift dispute resolution between landlords and tenants.

“I rise to introduce a Bill to establish a Rent Authority to regulate the renting of premises, to protect the interests of landlords and tenants, and to provide a speedy adjudication mechanism for the resolution of disputes and matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. The Bill has already been published in an extraordinary issue of the Official Gazette,” Abdullah said while moving the legislation.
Following the Chief Minister’s introduction, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather placed the Bill before the House for consideration.
If passed, the Bill is expected to create a legal framework to ensure balance between landlords’ rights and tenants’ protections, addressing a longstanding gap in the region’s housing and rental sector.
The discussion on the bill will be conducted on October 28, 2025.
