SRINAGAR: As part of the ongoing Hafta-e-Shahadat commemorations marking the 35th assassination anniversary of Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq (RA), Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid Srinagar organised a special day-long programme featuring Qur’an Khwani, a congregational prayer meet, and a grand Qur’an recitation competition at the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar.

More than 30 leading Islamic seminaries from across Kashmir, including remote border regions, participated in the event, which saw dozens of young Qaris displaying their recitation skills before a packed gathering of religious scholars, imams, and members of the public.
The programme was presided over by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who in his address paid tribute to his slain father and predecessor, whose legacy, he said, continues to inspire Kashmir’s religious and social conscience. Mirwaiz said the event was organised not only to honour the memory of the slain leader but also to instil among the younger generation a deep attachment to the Qur’an and its teachings.
“This gathering is a humble effort to encourage our youth to remain connected to the divine word and live by its guidance,” Mirwaiz said, extending his gratitude to the participating institutions and scholars.
Top honours in the Qur’an recitation competition went to Qari Fayaz Ahmad from Ashraf-ul-Uloom, Hyderpora; Qari Muhammad Yahya from Jamia Qasmiya, Handwara; Qari Muhammad Yasin of Dar-ul-Uloom Bilaliya; Qari Muhammad Asif Khan of Dar-ul-Uloom Daudiya; and Qari Farhan Ahmad Khan from Dar-ul-Uloom Sopore. They were awarded cash prizes and commemorative trophies for their outstanding performances. All participants were presented with gifts in recognition of their efforts.
The judging panel for the competition included distinguished Qaris and scholars—Molvi Muhammad Amir, Muhammad Ishtiyaq, and Mufti Ijaz Ahmad Masoodi—who evaluated the recitations based on tajweed, pronunciation, and overall presentation. Scholar Maulana MS Rehman Shams conducted the event proceedings.
The day’s programme drew a large turnout and formed a key part of the wider week-long remembrance activities in honour of Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq, who was assassinated on May 21, 1990.
