SRINAGAR: Police in South Kashmir’s Shopian district have seized five tractors, two dumpers, one tipper and one JCB for their alleged involvement in unauthorised extraction and transportation of minerals from Keegam and nearby areas.

Officials said the seizures were made during a series of enforcement drives following reports of rampant illegal mining in the region. Several vehicles were intercepted and impounded on the spot, leading to the registration of five separate FIRs at the concerned police stations.
According to police, the cases — registered under FIR numbers 221, 225, 226, 227, and 228 of 2025 — demonstrate the administration’s determination to curb illegal mining and protect natural resources. Each case pertains to vehicles allegedly used for unlawful mineral extraction and transport.
A police spokesperson said that strict legal action is being taken against all those involved. “Shopian Police are committed to protecting the district’s environment and will not allow illegal mining to continue unchecked. A zero-tolerance approach has been adopted,” the spokesperson said.
Authorities have appealed to residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and report any such illegal activities. Police have assured that the identity of informants will be kept confidential and swift punitive measures will follow against violators.
Officials added that the ongoing enforcement drive is part of a broader initiative to ensure sustainable use of natural resources and prevent environmental degradation in the district.
