Three civilians were arrested and killed in army custody after the killing of four soldiers in an ambush by militants on December 21.

Reports appearing in the media quoted sources saying that the Army initiated a thorough internal investigation following allegations that the civilians died while in its custody. The probe, while not delving into specifics, hinted at procedural shortcomings on the part of a few personnel involved.

“All efforts are being made to ensure that the investigations are fair, comprehensive, and conclusive,” stated an Army spokesperson. “Further actions will be determined based on the outcome of the investigations and the finalisation of the proceedings.”

The deaths sparked widespread outrage, with relatives of the deceased and political leaders alleging custodial torture. The Jammu and Kashmir police also launched their own investigation into the matter.

Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed hope that the ongoing investigation into the deaths would lead to justice and provide solace to the grieving families. She raised concerns over past inquiries into similar incidents, citing a lack of accountability for those responsible.

Meanwhile, a joint security review meeting chaired by Director General of Police R R Swain and General Officer Commanding White Knight Corps Lieutenant General Navin Sachdeva was held in Poonch today to assess the security situation ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the region.

During the meeting, discussions focused on strategising plans for smooth operations, maintaining peace and security, and ensuring incident-free elections. The officials also deliberated on measures to dismantle Over-Ground Worker (OGW) modules, accelerate anti-terror operations, and strengthen the anti-infiltration grid.
