SRINAGAR: In an impressive achievement for the medical community of Kashmir, noted pulmonologist Dr Rafi Ahmed Jan has been recognised as the first Fellow of the Indian Association for Bronchology (IAB) from the region. This prestigious accolade marks a significant milestone in interventional pulmonology, a rapidly advancing field in respiratory medicine.

Dr Jan’s induction as a Fellow of the IAB is a testament to his exceptional contributions and dedication to interventional pulmonology. The IAB, India’s foremost forum for this speciality, awarded him the fellowship in recognition of his substantial achievements and unwavering commitment to advancing medical practice.
With an illustrious career spanning several decades, Dr Jan, an MD, FCCP, and FACP, has established himself as a leading figure in pulmonary and internal medicine. He currently serves as a professor of Respiratory Medicine at Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag. Previously, he made significant contributions at the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), where he was Head of the Department of Internal and Pulmonary Medicine.
Dr Jan’s expertise extends beyond pulmonology to encompass sleep medicine and intensive care. His clinical practice involves treating patients with a wide array of respiratory ailments, as well as associated cardiovascular and diabetic conditions. His comprehensive approach to patient care has earned him respect and admiration within the medical community and among his patients.
The IAB fellowship recognises Dr Jan’s extensive scientific publications, his role in organising continuing medical education (CME) events, symposia, and conferences, and his active participation in bronchology conferences where he has presented numerous papers. Additionally, his instrumental role in the formation and strengthening of the IAB, alongside his dedication to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training, has been pivotal in earning this distinction.
Interventional pulmonology, the speciality for which Dr Jan has been recognised, is a relatively new but rapidly evolving field within pulmonary medicine. It involves the use of endoscopy and other advanced tools to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the lungs and chest. Procedures in this speciality include:
Flexible Bronchoscopy: Viewing the airways and diagnosing lung disease.
Bronchoalveolar Lavage: Collecting a sample from the lungs for diagnosis.
Lung or Lymph Node Biopsy: Diagnosing diseases such as cancer.
Airway Stent (Bronchial Stent): Keeping airways open in patients with obstructions.
Balloon Bronchoplasty: Dilating narrowed airways.
Rigid Bronchoscopy: Handling complex cases, such as removing large obstructions.
Foreign Body Removal: Extracting foreign objects from the airways.
Pleuroscopy and Thoracentesis: Procedures for diagnosing and treating conditions of the pleura and draining fluid from the chest cavity.
