SRINAGAR: President Droupadi Murmu mourned the loss of lives in a road accident in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday and conveyed her condolences to the bereaved families.

“The news of people getting killed after a vehicle fell into a gorge in the Ramban area on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway is very sad. I offer my condolences to the bereaved families,” Murmu said in a post on X.

Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh expressed his condolences, acknowledging the gravity of the situation and assuring continuous support to the affected families.

Similarly, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha conveyed his shock and grief, emphasising the need for immediate assistance to the victims’ kin. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed profound dismay over the tragic road accident in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday.

Taking to micro-blogging site X (formerly Twitter) Office of LG JK said “Deeply shocked to learn of the unfortunate road accident in Ramban in which precious lives have been lost. My heartfelt condolences to bereaved families. I’ve issued instructions to Dist Admin & Div Com to render all assistance, as provided in the rule, to the kin of victims”.

National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah and Vice-President Omar Abdullah conveyed their sorrow regarding the tragic road accident in Ramban, which resulted in the loss of ten lives.

“JKNC President Dr Farooq Abdullah and VP Omar Abdullah are deeply saddened to know about the death of 10 persons who died in a tragic road accident on NHW near Batry Cheshma, Ramban early this morning. They send their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of victims of this unfortunate road tragedy,” party in a post on X said.

In a devastating incident on the mountainous Jammu-Srinagar National Highway near Battery Chashma, Ramban district, a passenger cab skidded off the road and plummeted into a deep gorge, resulting in the loss of 10 lives.

The accident occurred between 1:30-2:00 am, sending shockwaves through the region. Sources familiar with the matter revealed that the ill-fated vehicle, a Tavera passenger cab, was en route from Jammu to Srinagar when the tragedy unfolded.

The passengers, suspected to be labourers heading to Srinagar for work, tragically lost their lives in the mishap. Rescue efforts, despite facing adverse weather conditions including heavy rain, have thus far led to the recovery of 10 bodies from the gorge. Details surrounding the accident remain scarce. Some reports identified the driver as Balwan Singh of Amb Ghrotha in Jammu.

The exact number of passengers aboard the vehicle remains unknown as it plunged into a ravine approximately 1000 feet deep, obscuring visibility and complicating rescue operations. Authorities, including the police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), swiftly mobilised to the scene to aid in rescue efforts.

ASP Ramban, Gourav Mahajan, confirmed the ongoing search and recovery operation, noting the challenging conditions faced by rescue teams. Among the deceased are identified individuals, including the driver Balwan Singh of Amb Ghrotha in Jammu, and Vipin Mukhiya Bhairagang of West Champaran in Bihar, highlighting the diverse backgrounds of those impacted by the tragedy.
