SRINAGAR: A First Information Report (FIR No. 48/25) under Sections 271, 275, and 61(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered at Zakoora Police Station against individuals found involved in the sale and distribution of spoiled and rotten meat in Srinagar.
The action follows a major raid conducted on Thursday by the Food Safety Department Srinagar in coordination with the Drug and Food Control Organisation (DFCO), during which 1,200 kilograms of foul-smelling, stale meat were seized and destroyed on the spot. The consignment, stored for distribution to markets and restaurants, was declared unfit for human consumption by a team of food safety officers led by Assistant Commissioners of Food Safety from ICLC and Srinagar.
According to officials, the seized meat originated from a factory in the Zakoora area known for producing traditional Wazwan delicacies such as Kabab, Rista, and Gushtaba. These items were allegedly reheated and sold at low prices, kababs at Rs 20 each and rista at Rs 180 per dozen — not just in Srinagar but also supplied to eateries across multiple districts.
The authorities emphasised that the raid was initiated based on credible intelligence, and legal action is now being pursued against the concerned food business operators under the Food Safety and Standards Act. “This enforcement drive is being conducted under the direction of Secretary Health and Medical Education, Dr Syed Abid Rasheed, and Commissioner FDA, Smita Sethi, to ensure consumer food safety,” a senior official stated.
