Government is going to release some political prisoners on the eve of Eid-Al-Zaha to enable them to celebrate the festival with their families but no prominent political leader is in the list.

“I have asked for the files and after going through them the release of some prisoners is expected by Friday,” minister for state for home Nasir Aslam Wani said to Kashmir Life.

Sources said state government is examining the files of the prisoners and a decision is likely to come by Thursday evening.

Sources however made it clear that no prominent separatist leader is going to be released.

Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Gilani has demanded release of all detained leaders and activists languishing in different jails of the state and India ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha festival.

“The continued incarceration of liberation leaders including Masarat Aalam Butt, Mushtaq-ul-Islam, Muhammad Yousuf Falahi and Mohammad Subhan Wani was against the international law and recognized norms of justice,” Syed Ali Gilani said.

“There are over 750 political prisoners undergoing detention under the draconian law, Public Safety Act in various jails and police stations,” Gilani added.

Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Frooq has also called upon India to release all the detained Kashmiri leaders and activists languishing in different jails of the state and outside it before Eid-ul-Azha. Mirwaiz has expressed concern over the plight of political detainees.

Mirwaiz has appealed to the international human rights organizations including Amnesty International, Asia Watch and Red Cross to take cognizance of ‘the inhuman treatment being meted out to the Kashmiri inmates’.

The prominent jailed political leaders include Masarat Aalam Bhat who spearheaded 2010 uprising and was arrested in the month of October the same year.
