Curfew was imposed in Zanaskar following clashes between two communities resulting in the injuries to Sonam, Tesildar of the area and three other people. All the injured were shifted to Srinagar. Police said the situation is completely under control but curfew has been imposed in the town.

There was tension between the two communities since last month when 26 Budhist youth from the area converted to Islam, resulting in communal clashes between Muslims and Budhists. According to the locals these 26 youth belong to four families and were presently putting up with local Muslims. Sources said that since last 15 days there is a virtual social boycott against minority Muslim community as Budhists have stopped trading with them in wake of conversions.

These converted youth were temporarily putting up in Padam village, a Muslim dominated area in Zanaskar, but had to leave the village after they feared for their lives.

“We are being harassed by the local majority community since some of their people converted to Islam,” a local resident said. He added that there was tension since last month which led to the fresh clashes.

Police said that in the clashes between two communities in Zanaskar, Kargil, three persons including Tehsildar of Zanaskar were injured who were later shifted to Srinagar.

“Curfew has been imposed in the town. The situation is under control and is being constantly monitored by civil and police administration who are camping in the town. More reinforcement is dispatched from Srinagar to assist the administration,” said a police statement.
