SRINAGAR: Shab-e-Baraat prayers were held across the Kashmir valley on Tuesday night with traditional fervour, as thousands of devotees gathered at mosques and shrines to seek forgiveness and divine mercy. The largest congregation was witnessed at the Dargah Hazratbal shrine in Srinagar, where men, women and children offered special prayers.
However, night-long prayers were not allowed at the historic Jama Masjid in Nowhatta after authorities closed the mosque and placed its chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, under house arrest.
Shab-e-Baraat, considered one of the most significant nights in Islam, is observed on the 15th night of Sha’ban, the eighth month of the Islamic calendar. The occasion is widely regarded as the Night of Forgiveness, when Muslims engage in prolonged prayers, seek mercy for their sins and reflect on their conduct.
