SRINAGAR: The Speaker of the Jammu Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Abdul Rahim Rather, on Tuesday rejected an adjournment motion moved by MLA Pawan Gupta, who sought to discuss what he described as a “humanitarian crisis” in Jammu following recent weather-induced calamities.
The Speaker ruled that the issue did not qualify as a recent occurrence under the Assembly’s procedural rules. “You have already brought a similar resolution, and it will be discussed tomorrow,” the Speaker said while disallowing the motion.
Gupta had urged the House to suspend its regular business to deliberate on the widespread loss of property and displacement of families in the Jammu region due to incessant rainfall and flash floods.
The ruling prompted protests from several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members, including RS Pathania, who intervened, demanding that the crisis be taken up on priority. The legislators raised slogans of “Jammu ke saath insaaf karo” (Do justice with Jammu), leading to a brief uproar in the Assembly.
Order was restored after the Speaker reaffirmed that the matter would be taken up during the scheduled discussion, urging members to maintain decorum and proceed with the listed agenda.
