SRINAGAR: The Srinagar Traffic Police anticipates issuing over 4 lakh traffic challans this year, surpassing the 2022 figure of 3.75 lakh and matching last year’s record. SSP Traffic Srinagar, Muzafar Ahmad Shah, highlighted the department’s consistent efforts to curb violations and promote road safety.
The officer emphasised that the rise in fines and vehicle seizures is part of an ongoing enforcement strategy. Notable progress has been observed in curbing underage driving, with increased awareness among parents following recent incidents. Parents are now taking greater responsibility to prevent minors from operating vehicles, a trend seen as a positive shift in public attitudes.
SSP Shah stressed the importance of collective responsibility among road users, urging adherence to traffic rules such as wearing helmets, seat belts, and obeying licensing requirements. He pointed out the legal necessity of holding the appropriate licence for the class of vehicle being driven, warning that violations pose safety risks and lead to legal consequences.
The SSP reiterated the critical need to prevent minors from driving, noting that such actions are both illegal and dangerous. Legal action, including cases against guardians, will be pursued under the Motor Vehicles Act if minors are found behind the wheel.
He concluded by calling on the public to respect traffic laws and prioritise safety, stressing that responsible driving can significantly reduce accidents and ensure safer roads for all. (with KINS inputs)
