SRINAGAR: The Police Headquarters (PHQ) in Jammu and Kashmir has assigned 257 senior officers as mentors for an equal number of police stations across the Union Territory, in a move aimed at strengthening grassroots policing and improving administrative efficiency.
The decision, taken in line with the recommendations of the DGPs/IGPs Conference and the national vision of Viksit Bharat-2047, seeks to harness the experience and leadership of senior officers to enhance public service delivery, improve institutional efficiency and deepen community engagement.
As per official orders, each designated officer will adopt one police station for a period of one year and oversee its development under a clearly defined charter of responsibilities. The initiative is aimed at promoting citizen-centric policing, reinforcing professional values and enhancing public trust in law enforcement institutions.
Officials said the mentor officers will focus on inculcating the ethos and values of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, strengthening community outreach initiatives and improving police-public interactions. They will also guide police stations in maintaining crime records and ensuring proper documentation practices.
The senior officers have further been entrusted with reviewing the effective use of digital platforms and technological tools available under the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) and the Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS). They will encourage the adoption of emerging technologies, including e-Beat systems and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based innovations, to modernize policing and improve operational efficiency.
The order also directs mentor officers to monitor cleanliness, maintenance and the overall appearance of police stations and residential quarters. Special emphasis has been laid on ensuring hygienic toilet facilities for police personnel, visitors and detainees, besides maintaining well-organised and citizen-friendly reception areas.
However, the Police Headquarters has made it clear that mentor officers will not interfere in routine police functioning, including investigations, supervision of cases, operational matters, financial and administrative affairs of District Police Offices, or service-related grievance redressal mechanisms.
Among the prominent allocations, DIG Rayees Mohammad Bhat has been assigned Shergari Police Station in Srinagar, while Rajiv Pandey will mentor Nishat Police Station and Sridhar Patil has been allotted Janipura Police Station.
