SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Saturday said that the tourism assets at Watlab in North Kashmir’s Sopore area are not defunct and that concrete steps are being taken to boost tourism infrastructure there.

Responding to a query raised by MLA Irshad Rasool Kar, the Minister In-charge of the Tourism Department said that the government has projected upgradation work under the Capex Budget for 2024-25. This includes the renovation of assets such as a cafeteria, six double-room huts with kitchens, a meeting hall, and a five-bedroom guest house at Watlab, Sopore.
He stated that the department has already prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for carrying out repairs and upgradation, which includes fixing sanitary fittings, restoring the drainage system, painting, and other allied works.
The estimated project cost is Rs 48.82 lakh, with an approved allocation of Rs 10.00 lakh. However, Rs 8.00 lakh has been released so far, he said.
The Minister clarified that the tourist infrastructure at Watlab, Sopore, is not defunct but requires renovation and upgradation to enhance the visitor experience.
He further stated that the Tourism Department is committed to enhancing tourism potential in Sopore by promoting Watlab and other nearby destinations through sustainable tourism campaigns and by including these locations in tourism promotional literature and materials. (KNO)
