SRINAGAR: US President Donald Trump on Sunday announced that a peace agreement with Iran had been finalised, claiming the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened and the United States naval blockade lifted immediately.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran was “now complete” and congratulated all parties involved. He further stated: “I hereby fully authorise the toll-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorise the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade.”
The announcement followed a statement from Pakistan, which has reportedly been mediating between the two sides. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that after intensive talks, a peace deal between the United States and Iran had been reached, adding that both sides had agreed to the “immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts.”
However, Iranian officials had earlier pushed back against Pakistan’s claims, casting uncertainty over the status of the agreement. Key details of the deal have not yet been made public.
According to Sharif, both sides are expected to formally sign the agreement in Switzerland on Friday. It remains unclear when the Strait of Hormuz will fully reopen to international shipping.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global energy corridor, handling nearly one-fifth of global oil and gas shipments. Iran had reportedly restricted passage through the waterway following the outbreak of hostilities on February 28, while the United States imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports after earlier peace negotiations failed to yield results.
