Trump Declares “Only Two Genders” Hours After Taking Office

SRINAGAR: On his first day back in office, President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.” The directive marks a significant shift in federal policy, prioritising the recognition of biological sex over gender identity in government regulations, language, and programmes, reports appearing in the international media suggest.

The order asserts the administration’s commitment to safeguarding women’s rights by reinforcing the “immutable biological classification” of sex. It defines “woman” and “man” strictly based on biological distinctions, rejecting the concept of gender identity as a determinant of sex. President Trump described the erasure of biological sex in language and policy as harmful to women’s dignity, safety, and well-being, as well as corrosive to broader societal trust in science and governance.

The order calls for federal agencies to review and amend policies to reflect this stance, including changes to official documents such as passports and personnel records. It mandates that federal funding shall no longer support what it terms “gender ideology” and directs agencies to prioritise the protection of sex-based rights under laws like Title IX and the Civil Rights Act.

Provisions in the order address privacy concerns, including barring men from being housed in women’s prisons and ensuring single-sex spaces are maintained based on biological sex. Additionally, the order rescinds several executive orders and guidance documents issued under previous administrations, which President Trump’s administration criticised for promoting gender identity over biological sex.

The executive order has already sparked intense debate, with supporters praising it as a defence of women’s rights and opponents condemning it as discriminatory. The administration has committed to presenting proposed legislative text to codify the order’s definitions within 30 days.

This move signals a broader agenda by the Trump administration to prioritise what it describes as “biological truth” in federal governance, setting the stage for contentious legal and social battles in the months ahead.
