SRINAGAR: The United States launched airstrikes on Iranian military targets on Friday in retaliation for a drone attack on a commercial cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, with President Donald Trump accusing Tehran of violating a ceasefire agreement, according to Reuters.
The US Central Command said the strikes targeted Iranian missile and drone storage facilities, along with coastal radar installations, in response to what Washington described as an Iranian attack on a commercial vessel.
Trump said the drone attack constituted a breach of the ceasefire, describing it as a “foolish” violation. Shortly before the strikes, when asked by reporters whether the US would respond militarily, the President replied, “You’ll find out.”
According to Reuters, the drone attack targeted a cargo ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest oil shipping lanes. The latest US action marks a significant escalation despite the ceasefire announced earlier this week.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had responded by targeting locations hosting US forces in the region and vowed further retaliation following the American strikes.
US Vice President JD Vance said Washington remained committed to the ceasefire but warned that any further attacks would be met with force. The developments come amid renewed concerns over the security of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global energy supplies.
